A trio trudged wearily down a worn dirt path. Two were servants, and friends, of His Majesty King Mickey. The third, and unofficial leader was a young boy from a remote island world. Together, they were the most gossiped and loved group known to the worlds. But for now the trio would give up everything just to go back home. “Garwsh, sure seems like we’ve been walking for a long time, Sora.” Said Goofy, somewhat wearily, but a cheerful smile was still present on his face. “Yeah! We need to rest!” demanded Donald. “Ha, calm down Donald, I’ll let you rest for awhile, it gives me a chance to think more about this clue from Mickey.” Replied Sora, holding up a green envelope that was clenched in his hand tightly. “Yahoo!” yelled Goofy as he started to set up their tent. Sora smiled slightly, his two crazy friends could always bring a smile to his lips, even in the worst of times. “I just can’t figure it out!” Sora shouted, frustrated, as he tossed the letter to Goofy. “Give me that! You probably can’t even read Goofy!” “Ahuck, ‘course I can read Donald. Wasn’t I the one who suggested King Mickey gave us a clue to find our way home?” said Goofy. Sora tuned out before Donald could reply to Goofy’s remark. ‘Kairi, I wish I could know if you were happy or not. I wish I could see you. I wish I could see the others, Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie. I should have been able to hold onto you. I probably don’t even deserve to be in your thoughts. I should have stopped the darkness and freed you before you got mixed up in all that princess stuff. I should have…’ “Agh! Aren’t you even listening Sora?” exclaimed Donald. “Sorry, what?” asked Sora, flashing his trademark smile. “Donald was just pondering there about what King Mickey meant by, “‘Unmarred thought, the physical is not the key.’” Said Goofy. Sora’s brow furrowed as he thought as hard as he could. “Oh, phooey! We’re never gonna solve this riddle!” Donald exclaimed in his usual negative demeanor. Sora sighed and fell back onto his back, his wide deep blue eyes searching the clouds for an answer. He felt tears of frustration and anger brim in his eyes when no answer came to him. ‘Kairi.’ Kairi yawned and stretched, feeling very peaceful after her nap on the beach. “Goal! 5-4 my lead Wakka!” shouted Tidus. Kairi smiled, some things never changed. Selphie was sitting on the dock, nervously watching the match, or so it seemed, Kairi was perceptive enough to realize it was Tidus she was watching nervously. She stood up and walked over to Selphie, the two had grown close in the two weeks since their island had been restored. “Good sleep?” questioned Selphie, her eye’s never leaving the match. “Yes, thank you.” Said Kairi, grinning brilliantly. “You’re beaming.” Stated Selphie. “I am not!” blushed Kairi. “You dreamed about him again, didn’t you?” giggled Selphie. “How-that’s none of you’re business!” “You don’t need to keep things from me, Kairi.” Selphie finally looked away from the game and winked. “So, what was it about?” “Well-.” The trio sat in a companionable silence as each person pondered their thoughts about Mickey’s letter. ‘Stars don’t matter, neither do planets. Keep a tight rein on your emotions as you enter the light. Everything that makes up you, is what you need, wield that instead of weapons.’ “I just don’t understand!” whispered Sora after he finished reading that excerpt aloud. “Garwsh, maybe we should just take our minds off of it! Let’s go get some food, we’re camping here for the night!” “Yeah! That sounds good.” said Donald, uncharacteristically agreeable. “Let’s go!” Sora yelled happily, jumping to his feet and raced Donald and Goofy to the winding creek they had been traveling adjacent to. “I win!” laughed Sora, out of breath as Donald and Goofy pulled in right behind him. “Ohh! Phooey!” muttered Donald. “What was that Donald? You look a little hot, allow me to cool you off!” said Sora as he pushed Donald into the creek. Goofy laughed his, well, goofy, laugh at the sight of Donald so angry and wet. Sora had his back turned to him laughing. Goofy smiled and tip toed up to Sora, and pushed him. Sora quickly spun in midair, and grabbed onto Goofy’s hand, bringing both of them crashing into the creek next to Donald. Together they all laughed, even Donald. A couple of hours later, they trio was seated around a roaring campfire, each patting their own stomachs, full of fish. “So,” Sora’s voice broke the comfortable silence, “Donald, Goofy, what’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get back home?” “Well, I s’pect I’ll search out the Castle cook, and have him make me a glorious feast!” “You would think about your stomach!” chided Donald. “I guess the first thing I would do would be to find Daisy.” He mumbled the last part, making Goofy laugh. “What about you Sora?” asked Donald. A faint smile was present on Sora’s face as he answered, “I would give Kairi the biggest hug of her life.” “And then?” asked Goofy. “I’d give her back her charm.” “And then?” asked Donald. “Well, I’d, well, you know, I’d… go rest?” Sora finished lamely, sending his two friends into peals of laughter. “Oh, we’d know what you’d do!” “I think it’s getting a little late! Lets go to bed.” Sora’s voice rose above theirs, his leader tone was on. Goofy chuckled again, nodded, and lay down. Donald just smiled and lay down as well. “Sora, you must continue.” “What? Who’s there, what do you want with me?” “Unlocked and locked, the doors, is that all?” “You’re speaking in riddles! Who are you?” cried out Sora again. He still saw nothing but absolute darkness. “Let your heart shine through, do not let your emotions stop that. She awaits.” Sora thought he had heard that voice before, choking back tears, he said, “Mother?” “Everything seems to happen to you Sora. This will be hard, but remember her, and you will do fine. I love you, and I will never forget you.” “MOTHER!” screamed Sora, groping blindly in the darkness. Suddenly, the darkness was gone, and Sora was standing in sand, looking out over a sparkling blue ocean. Wiping his tears quickly, he looked around. Sora smiled a huge smile as he spotted the dock, the boat, the Papou Island, and the secret spot. It was his home, Destiny Island. “Kairi! Kairi! I’m back!” he yelled running around the island, shouting her name. “Sora?” asked Kairi, she too was standing on the beach looking at the sunset, her dark brown hair blowing gently in the tropical breeze. She smiled and ran towards him. “I knew you’d be back, I just knew it!” “Kairi!” reaching out to hug her, only to have her run through his arms like a ghost. “Sora look out!” she cried. Sora turned around to see a man shrouded in black, a sword held loosely in his long hands. “I’ve come back for you, just like I promised, Sora.” “NO!” Sora screamed as he woke up from his dream, he was covered in sweat. “Who’s there?” exclaimed Goofy, still half asleep and holding his shield tightly. “It was just me Goofy, go back to bed.” Whispered Sora. Goofy just smiled, and fell over, asleep once more. Sora frowned, trying to remember what had happened in his dream, all he could remember was Kairi’s face, and that was good enough for him as he rolled over in his bed, intent for a few more hours of sleep. “Kairi, that’s not a dream, that’s a nightmare!” “It was pretty scary, but I got to see him, and that’s good enough to me. I had this weird feeling, that it wasn’t just a dream, that we really did meet, I just know he had this ‘dream’ too.” Said Kairi gazing up at the clear blue sky. “So what do you think this dream meant?” asked Selphie. “I’m not sure, Selph,” replied Kairi, using the nickname she gave her after Sora sealed Kingdom Hearts. Sora re-read King Mickey’s letter for the thousandth time it seemed, squinting in the predawn light. The sun began to peak over the horizon, the light hitting Sora’s face, making his hair seem like it had blonde highlights. Sora slowly began to smile as he finished reading the letter once more; he let out a huge yell of triumph and raced to the forest. “Donald, Donald, wake up its mornin’!” said Goofy, shaking the poor duck. “Aw, phooey just a few more minutes.” Mumbled Donald. Goofy just kept poking him until Donald jumped up and bopped him on the head, yelling that he was awake. “You gotta come see what Sora did Donald!” said Goofy, rubbing his head. The duck just muttered darkly and followed him out of the tent. Together the two best friends climbed the dew-covered grass hill in silence. “You guy’s like it?” asked a very happy Sora, as he moved to let them have a better view. “You, you did this yourself?” gaped Donald. “You betcha!” smiled Sora. “What’re we supposed to do with it? You know we can’t fly from planet to planet in a gummi!” said Donald. “That’s where I come in.” replied Sora, giving a last little tweak to his creation. Goofy frowned, he felt like something wasn’t just right. “Ready for lift-off!” said Donald. “Here we go!” cried Goofy as he piloted the gummi off the ground and into the sky. “We’re leaving the planet’s atmosphere in 5, 4, 3, 2--.” Sora said. The multi-colored gummi flew through the last bit of atmosphere and into cold, hard, dark space. “Its still not too late to turn back!” said Goofy, sending a worried look at Sora. “I’ll be fine.” “I can’t believe I agreed to this stupid plan!” muttered Donald. “Radar’s showing the barrier, we’re almost to it.” Said Sora. “Don’t do it Sora! We’ll find a different way!” pleaded Goofy. “He’s right Sora, please just don’t do it!” agreed Donald. “But you’ll die out there!” Goofy tried once more to make Sora see reason. “No, not this time. I’ll see you two sometime in the future. Donald, Goofy, you’ve both been great best friends. I’ll never forget you.” Said Sora, flashing his grin once more, before leaving the cockpit. “Sora.” Whispered Donald. Sora popped open the hatch, and stepped out onto the gummi ship. Immediately he felt the absolute cold and the oxygen in his lungs was replaced with the vacuum of space. “No.” he thought, and instantly he felt fine, as if space couldn’t touch him. Sora carefully made his way to the bow of the ship, his eyes on a sparkling barrier the gummi was rocketing to. Sora closed his eyes and silently called for his keyblade, the Oathkeeper, to his hands. When he opened his eyes, it was if lightning was shooting through his blue eyes. Sora slowly lowered himself into a fighting stance, every muscle tight in preparation. “This is for you Kairi!” screamed Sora as he leapt from the gummi ship straight at the barrier, swinging his keyblade powerfully through space and slammed it with lightning force against the barrier. A white light erupted from his keyblade, and he knew no more. Disclaimer: I own nothing, no Disney characters, no Kingdom Hearts character, and no Final Fantasy characters.
